Bridesmaid – All For One

Bridesmaid's dress
Bridesmaid dress.
The big day has finally come, for us all!

It has been 12 months since the couple's engagement party, and with numerous wedding related events in between, I for one, am glad and relieved to finally see them tie the knot and send them on their merry way.
Getting made up
Getting all done up.
The day started early with hair and makeup, the bridesmaid goodie bag filled with robe, bandages and other accessories was a great personal touch. But with seven bridesmaids to get done up, soon everything seemed more like organised chaos rather than a plan of action but thankfully everyone was in a cheerful mood, and by the time the wedding photographer and videographers arrived, the place felt more like a film set than a house.
The wedding dress
The wedding dress.
In summary, the day went off with a bang with a beaming bride flanked by her husband, her bridesmaids and a rather entertaining bunch of groomsmen. However, I completely underestimated the physical demands of being a bridesmaid because by the time the reception rolled around, I was ready to collapse on the floor. My plan to eat to my heart's content went completely out the window as I found myself starring blankly at my plate of lamb shank (I never pass on a lamb shank).
Let’s be honest, a wedding brings out the diva in all brides. Some are just better than others at making demands nicely. Though there may be smiles on the wedding day, usually the road to getting there is filled with underlying tension and dissensions to various degrees. Thankfully, this experience has been one of the rare few that was free of complications.

However, if you are to read the article published in Huffington Post Canada appropriately titled “17 Things Brides Should Not Expect from Bridesmaids” , tragically, we have fulfilled many of the 'Not To Dos' and taking out the top spots are none other than:
- Don't expect all your bridesmaids (and groomsmen) to learn a stupid dance routine;
- Don't expect people to be happy about sacrificing their weekends.
So dear brides, a gentle reminder that you have all reaped the benefits of a prolonged engagement with way too many Facebook Likes, parties, kitch and teas, hen’s nights (which are in reality an entire day, figure that!). A wedding ring/gown/tiara isn't a license for hip-thrusting, body-rolling, Excel spreadsheeting free labour.

I, for one am relieved of my honourable bridesmaid duties. To my friends, soldier on ladies!
